"I paint what I see. Do you
see what I see?"
- Carole Alter .
Carole Alter is New York City born and educated.
She holds a Masters Degree in Fine Arts and was
a student of Ad Reinhardt and Robert Motherwell.
She has had both national and international shows
and is represented in many private collections.
Carole Alter's handling of space is unique. A
great expanse can be found on the smallest surface.
By making no historic or geographic indications,
her frame of reference becomes anywhere, anytime.
Ms. Alter paints glimpses of familiar objects engaged
in everyday activities. Things seen and remembered.
Her figures seem to move, to gesture. Her subjects
are numerous. The paintings are humorous, poignant,
mysterious. Each painting is an individual statement.
The medium is oil-pastel on paper.
It is the very distortion of shape and size, the
personal use of color, at times muted, never gaudy,
the just-right composition that make her paintings
accessible and real. We have seen these scenes
before. Where? When?
One sees in Carole Alter's work what one has seen
and felt, but has not often seen represented in
paintings. She has given us access to her mind.
